Lake Braies/Prags

This treasure of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park is situated at the height of 1494 meters above sea level in the Braies Dolomites, only a few kilometres south of the Alta Val Pusteria.

In its emerald green waters that, according to season and daytime, assume incredible green and blue shades, the majestic Croda del Becco/Seekofel massif is reflected – the reason of the great interest towards this place of amateur and professional photographers. Its formation dates back to the mudslides that gave birth to a kind of a natural dam. Still now, the lake water leads into the Braies stream.

As a starting point for the Alta Via 1 hikes, the lake is well frequented by tourists from all over the globe. But even in the past, it was on everyone’s lips, owing to a lugubrious legend. They used to say that on the southern border of the lake, there was the portal to the netherworld of the Fanes Kingdom. Considering that the lake maximum depth reaches 36 meters, it doesn’t seem so improbable.

The seasons replace each other, but Lake Braies is always worth visiting. In spring, the fresh green colors of awakening nature adorn the shore. In summer, colorful dragonflies inhabit the lake. And in winter, crystals of snow and ice turn the lake and its surroundings into a magic world. Lake Braies is rightly considered a part the UNESCO Natural Heritage!
